Waltham Walks in the Woods

Sunday September 23, 2007

On Sunday September 23, more than 100 people turned out to walk in the woods of Waltham's Beaver Brook North Reservation. It was a beautiful day!

Waltham Land Trust, who helped to initiate this event, provided maps of the trail and guides for walks at 1:00 and 2:30. Sponsorship funds were provided by the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Waltham Tourism Bureau. Healthy snacks and water were provided by Hannaford Supermarket in Waltham. The City of Waltham lent the use of their trolley and the Waltham Boys and Girls Club helped out with their van to provide free transportation for any that needed it to and from the event. Auxilliary officers of the Waltham Police Department helped out with safety and street crossing, including bike patrols that rode the paths in the woods. Access to facilities was generously provided by the National Archives across the street from Elsie Turner Field, where the walks began. An outreach worker from Joseph M. Smith Community Health Center provided free blood pressure screenings, and free T-shirts were provided by the Waltham Family YMCA. In all, it was a great collaboration! We hope to do something similar next year!
